June 20th

The Chester River Rowing Club is having a "Pig Rowst" (note play on words) on Saturday June 20th. Tickets are $25.00 and include dinner and a drink plus some type of entertainment I hope. I'd like to plan a paddle from Millington down the Chester River to the boat house. One of our rowers has offered her place as launch site. It's probably a 10 mile paddle down to the boat house near the Sultana. The Pig Rowst starts at 5:00 PM. We could do a late morning paddle and have time to retrieve cars before dinner is served. There's even a real bathhouse to change clothes!
If you would be interested or know of anyone else that might be, please let me know.

The 21st Annual Delmarva Paddlers Retreat

It was in 1988 that Charlie Cole and his lovely wife Cindy started an annual gathering of paddlers on the western shore of Rehoboth Bay in Lewes, DE, to exchange paddling skills and knowledge – today that has become an annual gathering at which Greenland-style sea-kayakers gather to celebrate the origins of kayaking and hone traditional kayaking techniques and skills

In 2008 they offered an "extended" Delmarva option (early arrival) as well.  See The Retreat  for a report from a previous year's event.  Registrations are usually full by the first week of September.

A Qajaq USA event , the Delmarva Paddlers Retreat  is held at Camp Arrowhead across the Rehoboth Bay from Dewey Beach, Delaware.  The Retreat has evolved into a gathering of traditional skills enthusiasts.  All instruction will be geared towards Greenland techniques, so a Greenland paddle is preferred.  Accommodations are cabins (bunks) or tenting under the pines near the bay shoreline.  Enjoy learning to kayak the Greenland way.  Mentoring from some of the best in the nation.  Skills learned can be transferred back to the Euro blade, but why once you’ve paddled the stick you won’t want to go back.

This event has no relationship to the Delmarva Paddlers  message board, but many of us were/there.

The 20th Annual Delmarva Paddlers Retreat

A big one year only deviation form the usual first weekend of October.  Look for this event to be very special on it's 20th anniversary!

It was in 1988 that Charlie Cole and his lovely late wife Cindy started an annual gathering of paddlers on the western shore of Rehoboth Bay in Lewes, DE, to exchange paddling skills and knowledge – today that has become an annual gathering at which Greenland-style sea-kayakers gather to celebrate the origins of kayaking and hone traditional kayaking techniques and skills

They will be offering an "extended" Delmarva option (early arrival) as well.

June 5th  Coastal Kayak’s 5th Annual Kayak for Cancer

June 6th    Manhattan Circumnavigation

Join the Atlantic Kayakers on a paddle around Manhattan.  see their site for more details.  From the site: Although this is a long paddle, it is not very taxing. This is because we scheduled it so that we get a push from the tidal currents all the way around. However,  you should be reasonably fit to keep up with the group. The waves you are likely to encounter are in the 1 to 2 foot range. There can be some turbulent waters in a few areas, though. You must know how to brace, and  a roll or  a solid self-rescue technique is strongly recommended.

Sponsored by Coastal Kayaks, Jennifer is being very smug about what is in store for the participants this year.  Each year Mitch and Jennifer host a way for all paddlers to help the American Cancer Society and have fun doing it. And eat well doing it.   Last year's event ran into a bit of a hurricane that happened through here, so we need to double the effort this year and make this a big success.  I'm a 2 time cancer survivor of 12 and 14 years and I know I paddle others who also are survivors, and with several who continue the battle.  Hope to see and meet many of you at this worthwhile event.

August 2nd            Rock Hall Paddle Day

9 a.m. – 3 p.m.    Come to the Rock Hall Yacht Club for a fun Day of Paddling

Talk to local vendors – try out some canoes and kayaks in the water.  Participate in – or watch – Kayak and Canoe Races  From Craig O'Donnell post to the Delmarva Paddlers site:

"We've set the courses for the August 2 race in Rock Hall. They have been laid out so that, with the exception of a few minutes of the Expert course, the racers are in view of the beach and the people "messing about" in the beach area. Race time is 10:30 AM.   Courses will be run counterclockwise, leave the buoys to port (left).
Novice Course:
Starting line past  Daymark 3, out to and around Daymark 1, back to start 1.36 miles.

Expert Course:
This is I hope a new and interesting race idea. Captains on the day of the race will vote on how long the course should be - 1 2 or 3 laps.  The basic Expert course is 3.2 miles. Starting line, past Daymark 3, directly to and around Can 5 at the
mouth of Langford Bay, to and around Can 7 in Langford Creek, back past the Yacht Club moorings to start. Repeat as necessary.

Classes:
We plan on Expert Single, Expert Doubles, Novice Single, Novice Double, but the final details depend on who has entered.

This Fall, Next Year:
There's an outside possibility of a race from Chestertown to Rock Hall YC later this fall (14 miles). If it is not scheduled this year, we'll work on having it next year. There's a lot of interest in this race but the circumstances have not been "fortuitous" so far.
We'll have information circulating earlier in 2004. RHYC plans to have Paddle Day and the Langford Bay Race as an annual event.  contact Craig O'Donnell dadadata@friend.ly.net

Want a fun weekend of paddling and camaraderie with fellow CPA members?  Would you like to meet paddlers from another club?  Come to the second annual Fall Fun fest.  This year we are moving north to Elk Neck State Park to offer different paddling opportunities.  Elk Neck is at the top of the Chesapeake Bay and should be jellyfish free.  Cold water clothing would be advisable.  CPA gear requirements are in effect. For more information, contact John Blackburn

Sept 28, Sunday         2003 Cancer Benefit Paddle  Still on and no more big storms in the forecast. We hope.

Weather, this season's on going story, was threatening and held the size of the gathering down a bit.  It should be noted however and an American made kayak with a GP paddle won the race.

This is from Mitch and Jennifer at Coastal Kayaks.  Every year they sponsor a paddle event supporting the American Cancer Society that’s near and dear to many of us.  And each year they do something a little different and fun.

The Cancer Benefit Paddle will be taking place on Sunday Sept. 28th and will begin at 3pm. The event will consist of:

3:00-5:00 - Rentals and Demos

5:00 - 2 mile race around the "treacherous" Little Assawoman Triangle

6:00 - Fun family kayak races and games including kayak tug-of-war and blindfolded tandem races!

$10 per person suggested donation covers the day.
All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
For directions and to see a photo from last year, Click here: Coastal Kayak

We hope to see you there.

Coastal Kayaks is located on the Assawoman Bay, off Rt 1 just north of Fenwick Island.

October 3-5                    Delmarva Paddlers Retreat.

The Delmarva Paddlers Retreat  will be held October 3-5, 2003 on the Rehoboth Bay near Lewes, Delaware. Skills learned can be transferred back to the Euro blade, but why once you’ve paddled the stick you won’t go back.

See special events for a report from last years event.

contact Robin Snow for more information anorak@ComCAT.COM  Registrations are usually full by the first week of September.

Oct 17-19, 2003 (Fri-Sun)  second annual Raystown, PA camping trip

The dates for the second annual Raystown, PA camping trip have been set for Oct 17-19.  Some campers are planning a river trip on the 16th and others have stated an intent to stay through the 20th.  A pot-luck dinner is planned for the 18th.

Raystown Lake is a COE campground and an ideal camp for those who don't really like to camp entirely primitive.  Bathroom and hot showers are within the campground and the campsites are located right on the shores of the placid lake.

Last year's get-together featured really good live music and warm fellowship among fellow paddlers.  This year many returning folks will be bringing their families as the few kids in attendance last year had a great time.  While this trip may seem distant, folks have traveled greater distances to tap into this pleasant event.  For more info you can join the tread at:

I hope some of you may be able to participate this year... Alan  paddlerreid@yahoo.com

Sunday   Sometime soon             The Surfrider's Rehoboth Bay Paddle             Updated 6/2/03

The Surfrider Foundation's Annual Rehoboth Bay Paddle was postponed..  The Rehoboth Sailing Association was registering 40-knot winds at the launch site.  I'll post the new date as soon as they decide.   Hopefully no one was severally inconvenienced.

The Fourth Annual "Rehoboth Bay Paddle" for "All Non-Motorized Watercraft" is held each year to help raise ecological awareness of the Bay. Scheduled for Sunday June 1, 2003, and beginning at 11AM from the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association registration starts at 10AM.  A $10.00 entry fee donation includes lunch at a local bayside restaurant and benefits the Delaware Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.  All "non-motorized water craft" are invited.  SOT's, recreational kayaks, sea kayaks, canoes, sailboats, Baidarkas, wind surfers, and surfers.  We will tour Head of the Bay, Rehoboth Bay, and this year the paddle will include a stop by Thompson Island, a historical area as it is an old summer spot and burial grounds for the Nanticoke Indians.   While there we will conduct a beachfront clean up of the island.  We are hoping to be joined by a representative of the tribe.  After that, we will paddle over to the Lighthouse Restaurant, where a hamburger (I’m lobbying for some veggie burgers too) and soda lunch will be provided for the paddlers.  Hope to see you there.  Evidently the state has a number of Kayaks that they are willing to let us use.  If you want to participate and need a boat, email Lauren Fuqua at laurfuqua22@hotmail.com.

As a side note, after the lunch several of us will be paddling our sea kayaks south towards Burton Island for a little exploration.  Tides should be relatively high for this year’s event, unlike last year when we experienced a low blow out tide.  Hope to see some new faces this year.  Chris

The Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association is located just south of Dewey Beach on the bay side.
